iPhoto

I have tried to learn photoshop. It is a remarkable tool with unlimited photo editing capabilities. With that said, iPhoto is a good tool for where we need to go to introduce and hook kids with the multimedia capabilities of the laptop.

Photoshop is not impossible to learn, but out of sight - out of mind and it takes a little re-learning after being away from the program. Also, introducing it is more difficult. With that said, it was very encouraging to see everyone progress well in class utilizing iPhoto.

Good luck photo editing.

WISC March 7th - Engaging Students with Technology

Please Read after you sit down

Due to the weather last week, the teacher leaders weren't able to meet with AEA13 staff to plan the four half-hour breakout sessions for March 7th's WISC 1/2 day at Elk Horne.

I was at Westside High school in Omaha, at an Apple Computer seminar, when Tina Wahlert called and asked if I wanted to present something about blogging. I had no problem filling in since I recently set up a blog about current issues at CAM High School and linked it to our homepage.

I am comfortable writing and thought I'd jump in with both feet as we are currently holding a multimedia class and we are required to read and comment on a blog. After posting entries and making comments I was quickly introduced to the world of blogging.

I feel using a blog, or a webpage, to communicate with patrons and students falls under a broader umbrella that can be linked to student engagement. Right now in education, especially in small town Iowa, it is my belief that engagement is something every teacher and administrator needs to pay close attention to. The number of non-motivated students seems to be increasing and we have to find ways to engage students who are disinterested.

Right now at CAM we are working towards utilizing technology increase student engagement and level the playing field for those who have limited or no access to technology at home.

Having technology in schools is not a new concept. We've had computers and computer labs in most schools for almost two decades. Now it's time to put technology to better use.

Notes from Westside High School

Westside High School in Omaha, Nebraska implemented a 1 to 1 initiative putting an I-book in the hands of their 2100 high school students almost three years ago. Rex, Joanie, Kay, Judy Griffin and myself went to the school to hear from teachers and see this approach to providing technology first hand.

Now, the enormity of the school, staff, departments and almost everything that is in this public school doesn't match real well with CAM High School and it's size. However, the stories and demonstrations were more than motivating for me, and judging by the comments on the drives home, hopefully everyone who attended.

We heard from a CAD instructor who would never give up his AutoCAD and PC lab, who now uses a program popular throughout the world called "Vectorworks" ran on MAC and his PC lab is gone; There was the French teacher who marched into the Central Office proclaiming "This is a big mistake" who now has students performing at unbelievable levels using technology. We heard from, and saw about a dozen teachers and many who were very skeptical.

The administration was very proactive and put the content decisions in the hands of the teachers. Also, there were no quotas, or mandated lesson plan integration models. The teachers implemented at their own pace and were required to show off what they were doing in their departments.

Most of our teachers are the "department" but we have study teams, we have more powerful computers in our hands and we have a group ready to deliver professional development that will give teachers the basics and offer opportunities to do more.

I tried to be as much of a skeptic as I could, but the sincerity and the shear demonstration of the material from the teachers has me excited for the future of eduction....especially at CAM High School

Blogging

Well the best way to try something out is to just jump into it feet first. Actually I think I have an account on here from several years ago...signed up, never posted.

I see was Judy means as if you hit next blog several times you will find some dicey blogs with inappropriate pictures to add to the content. So I chose not to include this blog in their directory.

I'm guessing if I comment on our technology blog you will be able to access and somehow link my blog to yours and vice-versa. That way it's a chosen community.

If I need to use a different service, Judy, please let me know or we can explore how to host this on our server to make it safer (if we are to let students access the blogs).

I do like this as it has spell check much like MS Word. I was fearing having to dust off the dictionary every time I got nervous about a word.

I did look for other services, but again there are a lot of "interesting" blogs out there that do not suit our needs.

Judy thanks for the very good opening night for professional development. It went fast and was very relevant.
